How to Lower Your Cost per Lead on Meta and Google Ads

Practical ways to cut cost per lead on Facebook, Instagram and Google Ads: tracking, offers, landing pages, creative testing and lead quality.

Most businesses that tell us their ads "don't work" are not short of budget. They are paying too much for each enquiry, or paying for enquiries that never turn into customers. Cost per lead (CPL) is usually fixable, and the fixes are rarely about the ad platform's settings.

Here is the order we look at things in.

1. Fix tracking before touching anything else

If the platform cannot see which clicks became leads, it cannot find more people like them. Make sure every lead is recorded as a conversion:

  • Meta: install the Pixel and set up the Conversions API so leads are still counted when browsers block tracking.
  • Google Ads: track form submissions, calls from ads and WhatsApp clicks as separate conversions.

Then check the numbers against your own records for a week. If the platform says 40 leads and your inbox has 25, solve that first.

2. Make the offer worth the click

The fastest way to cut CPL is a better reason to enquire. "Contact us" is not an offer. "Free 15-minute consultation", "Get a quote within 2 hours on WhatsApp" or "Book a site visit this weekend" gives people something specific to say yes to.

3. Send people to a page built for one action

Sending ad traffic to your home page means visitors have to hunt for the next step. A focused landing page has one headline that matches the ad, proof (reviews, results, logos), a short form or WhatsApp button, and nothing else to click. It should load in under three seconds on a phone.

4. Shorten the form

Every extra field costs leads. Ask only for what you need to make the first call: name, phone, and one qualifying question. You can collect the rest later.

5. Choose the right lead format

  • Instant forms on Meta are cheap per lead but often lower in quality. Turn on "higher intent" and add one qualifying question.
  • WhatsApp ads suit businesses that can reply quickly; conversations often convert better than form fills.
  • Search ads on Google catch people already looking, so leads are usually warmer, at a higher cost per click.

6. Give the algorithm room to learn

Both platforms need enough conversions to optimise. Avoid splitting a small budget across many ad sets with narrow audiences. Fewer campaigns with broader targeting and a clear conversion goal usually beat many tiny ones.

7. Test creative, not just audiences

On Meta, creative is now the main targeting lever. Test genuinely different ideas (a customer testimonial video, a before-and-after, a founder speaking to camera) rather than small changes to one image. Keep the winners, retire the rest every few weeks.

8. Cut wasted spend on Google

Review the search terms report weekly and add negative keywords for searches that will never convert ("free", "jobs", "course", competitor names you cannot serve). Pause keywords that spend without converting after a fair test.

9. Measure cost per customer, not just cost per lead

A ₹200 lead that never answers the phone is more expensive than a ₹600 lead that books. Mark which leads became customers, feed that back to the platforms where possible, and judge campaigns on cost per sale.

10. Reply fast

Speed to lead is the cheapest optimisation there is. A reply within five minutes converts far better than one the next morning. Set up instant WhatsApp or SMS replies and a clear owner for every new enquiry.

The short version

Track properly, make a clear offer, use a focused landing page, keep forms short, test bold creative and follow up fast. Most CPL problems disappear once those basics are in place.
